"Mattea's larger than life guitar work roars with an untethered ferocity that is only paralleled by Wu's emotionally charged creative core of percussion." - Week in Pop
Two Dragons and a Cheetah is the Washington, DC-based duo made up of singer-guitarist, Maryjo Mattea, and drummer, Joel Wu. 2D&C blends together abrasive hard rock guitars, melodic vocals, funk and alternative inspired drum beats, and intense, yet pop-sensible songwriting, resulting in a sound that is both aggressive and pretty all at the same time. It’s melodic garage rock, drenched in distortion, yet easy on the ears. It’s dirty and it’s beautiful and unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. It’s like unicorns making babies on the sun. It’s Two Dragons and a Cheetah.

In the summer of 2012, Mattea saw a two-piece band play at a house show in DC. Impressed and inspired by their ability to perform complex and engaging music with only two people, she approached friend (and then co-worker), Wu. "We don't need anybody else," she told him. "We can do this, just you and me." A band was born. That band was without a name, however, until November 2012. Midway through their set at their first show in Baltimore, MD, Mattea informed the crowd that their band was still in its infancy and needed a worthy title. Then, amidst the general nightclub clamor, to the right of the stage, an intoxicated gentleman called out from the bar, "Two Dragons and a Cheetah!" Though completely illogical and random (and the product of a drunk man's imagination), it stuck. Think about it... It's a pretty memorable name and we're the only thing that comes up when you Google "Two Dragons and a Cheetah." Go ahead. Try it... we dare you. |
Maryjo is currently living in Washington, DC. Joel presently resides in Minneapolis, MN. We're making it work.
